Bloodlines in dog breeding — what they are and why they matter
In the world of dog breeding one constantly hears talk of “bloodlines”, yet rarely does anyone explain what it really means. It is not a synonym for breed, it is not a synonym for pedigree, and it is not a vague or romantic concept. A bloodline is a group of dogs within a breed that share common ancestors and, consequently, recognisable and predictable traits — morphological, temperamental and genetic. Understanding how lines work is understanding how breeding itself works.
Breed, line and pedigree — three different things
These three terms are often confused, but they refer to different levels of the same hierarchy.
The breed is the largest container: all Shiba Inu in the world belong to the same breed, share a standard and a common genetic heritage. But within the breed, variability is enormous — two Shiba Inu can be very different from each other while both being “standard”.
The bloodline is a subset of the breed: a group of dogs linked by particularly influential common ancestors, who have impressed recognisable traits on their descendants. When a breeder says “I work on the Gen line” or “my dogs come from the Tenkou line”, he is saying that his dogs share specific ancestors and, for this reason, show predictable and consistent characteristics.
The pedigree is the document that records the genealogy of a single dog — who the parents, grandparents and great-grandparents are. It is the tool with which one reads a dog’s bloodline, but it is not the line itself. A pedigree is a map; the bloodline is the territory.
How a bloodline is born
A bloodline is not “invented” — it forms over time, often over the course of many generations, around one or more particularly influential breeding dogs.
The mechanism is this: an exceptional dog — for morphology, for temperament, for health, or for the combination of all three — is used repeatedly as a sire. His best offspring are in turn selected, and their best offspring after them. As generations pass, the traits of that founder dog become concentrated and stabilised in the descendants: the dogs begin to resemble one another in a recognisable way, not because they are identical but because they share a “type” — a coherent set of characteristics that makes them identifiable.
At that point a bloodline exists. It is not a label assigned from the outside — it is an observable genetic reality: those who know that line recognise a dog that belongs to it even before reading the pedigree.
In the Shiba Inu, the main modern lines — Gen, Tenkou, Korotama, Matsumaru — each carry the name of the founder dog around which they formed in the postwar period.
The heart of the matter — homozygosity and predictability
To understand why bloodlines work as a selection tool, a genetic concept is needed: homozygosity.
Every dog carries two copies of each gene — one from the father, one from the mother. When the two copies are identical (homozygosity), the trait they express is predictable and is passed on to the next generation reliably. When they are different (heterozygosity), the result is less predictable — the puppy might express the trait of one copy or the other, or a mix of the two.
Working within a bloodline — mating dogs with common ancestors — increases homozygosity: the two copies of a gene tend to become identical because they ultimately come from the same ancestor. The result is greater predictability: the breeder knows, with reasonable certainty, how the puppies will be because he knows the traits of the line and knows that those traits are “fixed” genetically.
But homozygosity is a double-edged sword. It concentrates the merits — but it also concentrates the faults. If a recessive gene for a disease hides in the line, working within the same line can bring it out. This is why selection is never an automatic process: it requires knowledge, testing and the ability to recognise when it is time to introduce new blood.
The breeder’s three tools — inbreeding, linebreeding and outcross
Breeding is not a single method but a toolbox. The three fundamental tools are different degrees of the same spectrum — from maximum concentration to maximum diversification.
Inbreeding (close consanguinity)
Mating between very close relatives: brother and sister, father and daughter, mother and son. It is the most powerful tool and the riskiest. It rapidly concentrates the genes of a specific subject, making traits extremely predictable — but it amplifies both merits and faults with equal force.
Inbreeding is not a shortcut to having “prettier dogs faster”. It is a diagnostic tool: it brings out the hidden recessives in the line, showing the breeder what lies in the genetic heritage. An experienced breeder uses inbreeding in a targeted and limited way — typically for one generation, then opens up with an outcross.
A brother-sister mating from unrelated parents produces a coefficient of inbreeding (COI) of 25%, the same as father-daughter or mother-son. These are high values — the general recommendation is to stay below 5%, although in some breeds with a restricted gene pool this is not always possible.
The European Union has taken a stand. The Regulation on the welfare and traceability of dogs and cats, approved by the European Parliament on 23 April 2026 (558 votes in favour) and confirmed by the Council on 22 May 2026, explicitly prohibits inbreeding as a breeding practice. The text of Article 6 prohibits mating between parents and offspring, between grandparents and grandchildren, and between full and half siblings — with a single exception for the conservation of local breeds with an extremely limited gene pool. It is the first European legislation to regulate reproductive strategies, and it marks a historic change in dog breeding: close inbreeding, a tool used for decades, is now outlawed in the EU.
Here at Shinjukawa we have always been opposed to inbreeding as a selection method. Our approach is based on linebreeding with a maximum COI of 12.5% — the level of uncle-niece matings — which allows us to maintain the predictability and consistency of our lines without the risks of close consanguinity. It is not a recent choice dictated by legislation: it is the philosophy with which we have worked since 2010, because we believe that the health and welfare of our dogs come before the speed of selection.
Linebreeding (moderate consanguinity)
Mating between more distant relatives: cousins, uncle and niece, grandparent and grandchild. It is the most used method in modern dog breeding — the compromise between concentration and safety.
Linebreeding concentrates the traits of a specific ancestor without the brutality of inbreeding. The idea is: the more times the name of an exceptional dog appears in the pedigree, and the closer it is to the “first row” (parents, grandparents), the more his traits will be present in the puppies. But the greater degree of kinship maintains sufficient variability to contain the risks.
When a breeder says “linebred on Hakuba No Gen”, it means he is mating dogs that have Hakuba No Gen as a common ancestor on several lines of the pedigree — concentrating his traits without reaching close consanguinity.
Linebreeding is the way a bloodline is built and maintained over time. It is slow, it requires generations, and it works only if the breeder knows thoroughly the dogs behind the names of the pedigree — not only their appearance but also their faults, their offspring, their health problems.
Outcross (crossing between different lines)
Mating between two dogs that share no recent common ancestors. The opposite of inbreeding: maximum heterozygosity, maximum variability.
The outcross is used when a line needs “new blood” — when consanguinity has become too high, fertility has declined, or a fault has become fixed and cannot be eliminated from within. The introduction of a genetically distant subject breaks the patterns of the line, bringing diversity and often a phenomenon called “hybrid vigour” — the first generation tends to be more robust and vital.
But the outcross has a cost: predictability collapses. The puppies of the first generation can be very different from one another, and the traits of the line that the breeder had painstakingly fixed are “diluted”. For this reason the outcross is not an endpoint but a new starting point: after the outcross, the breeder selects the best subjects and begins to linebreed on them again, building a line that combines the traits of the original line with those brought by the external subject.
The story of Korotama Go Hakkakusou in the Shiba Inu is the most important historical example: a black-and-tan pinto — aesthetically off-standard — introduced as a radical outcross to save the breed from postwar genetic collapse. His COI was 0%, the maximum possible diversity. The price was the introduction of the pinto allele into the population, which even today occasionally re-emerges.
The coefficient of inbreeding — the thermometer of the line
The COI (Coefficient of Inbreeding) is a number, expressed as a percentage, that measures how inbred a dog is. Technically, it is the probability that the two copies of any gene are identical because they derive from the same ancestor.
COI — Coefficient of Inbreeding. It is the inbreeding coefficient: a percentage number that measures how much the two copies of each gene in a dog risk being identical because they were inherited from a common ancestor. A brother-sister mating produces a COI of 25%; cousin matings, around 6.25%. The recommended threshold for most breeds is below 5%.

But the number alone does not tell the whole story. A COI of 12% on a line of healthy, tested, champion dogs is a different situation from a COI of 5% on dogs never tested and never evaluated. As a geneticist has written: “what counts is not the number, but what is in the line that is being concentrated.”
For this reason direct knowledge of the lines — knowing who the dogs behind the names in the pedigree really are, which merits and which faults they carry — is irreplaceable. The COI tells you how much you are concentrating; only knowledge of the line tells you what you are concentrating.
Bloodlines and knowledge — why “working on the same lines since 2010” matters
When a breeder declares that he has worked on the same lines for many years, it is not a boast for its own sake — it is concrete information about the level of control he has over his selection.
A breeder who has seen three or four generations of dogs of the same line born, grow and reproduce has a knowledge that no genetic test and no pedigree can replace:
He knows which matings produce puppies with the right temperament and which do not — not in theory, by direct experience. He knows which traits emerge from the combination of certain sire lines with certain dam lines. He knows where the problematic recessives hide because he has seen them emerge and has learned to avoid them. He can predict, with reasonable approximation, what a puppy will be like as an adult — not only in appearance, but in character.
This knowledge is cumulative and non-transferable. It is not bought with a DNA test, it is not read on a pedigree, it is not learned in a course. It is built over time, litter after litter, year after year, watching one’s own dogs live, grow, age and produce offspring.
It is the difference between reading the names on a pedigree and knowing the dogs behind those names.
Why it matters for those choosing a puppy
For those who do not breed but are considering getting a puppy, all of this translates into a simple question: does the breeder you are considering really know his own lines?
The signs to look for are concrete:
The breeder can tell you what to expect from the puppy as an adult — not in generic terms (“it will be a nice dog”) but specific ones (“this line produces calmer subjects” or “from this combination I expect a more intense red”).
The breeder can tell you about the puppy’s grandparents and great-grandparents — not only show you the names on the pedigree, but tell you how they were, what offspring they produced, which merits and which limits they had.
The breeder tests his breeding stock — not only with genetic tests (which are necessary but not sufficient) but with shows, which evaluate morphology and temperament in a standardised context.
The breeder has a history — years of work on the same lines, with documentable results and verifiable offspring.
These are not subjective criteria. They are the practical translation of the difference between a kennel that works methodically on known lines and one that mates dogs without a selection project. The pedigree can look the same in both cases — but what is behind it does not.
